App of The Day: The Amazing Spider-Man Game

Developed by Gameloft, the new Amazing Spider-Man game lets you do the web-slinging and save New York City from the Lizard and his gang of thugs.
This is the official game of the The Amazing Spider-Man film (in theaters now). As Spidey, you web-sling, crawl, and fight your way through the streets of New York City. There are more than 25 missions inspired by the movie's storyline, all in an open-world, fully 3D NYC. There are also opportunities to unlock random missions, secrets, and collectibles as you play.

I downloaded the game late last night on my iPhone. In hindsight, that may have been a bad idea because I was still playing it at 2am this morning. It's pure fun and totally addictive. Gameloft has done an excellent job creating a fully immersive world with TASM game. The graphics are awesome and make the city feel alive. I can see this game causing me many more sleepless nights.

The app is available for iOS and Android devices now for $6.99.

Captain America Cupcakes

Creating these Captain America shield cupcakes is quite simple.  All that is needed are star and circle shaped cookie cutters, blue and white fondant, a rolling pin, red food coloring and your favorite vanilla cupcake recipe.  My favorite vanilla cupcake and vanilla frosting recipe are the ones that were featured on Brown Eyed Baker's Top 10 Cupcake Recipes list, which can be found here.  If your short on time or don't enjoy baking desserts from scratch, you could very easily use a box mix to first prepare your cupcakes.

Once your cupcakes are baking, the fun part begins!
  • Use a rolling pin to flatten the blue and white fondant until it's roughly .25 inches thick.
  • Use a small circle cookie cutter to cut out 24 circles from the blue fondant.
  • Use a small star cookie cutter to cut out 24 stars from the white fondant.
  • Use a large circle cookie cutter to cut out 24 circles from the white fondant.  Once cut out, use the smaller circle cookie cutter to cut out the insides of the circles.

  • Use your red food coloring to dye the vanilla icing your desired shade of red.  Once your cupcakes cool, ice each of them.
  • Dab a very small amount of icing on the back of each of the 24 stars and center it evenly on the blue circles.  Place each one in the center of each iced cupcake.
  • Lastly, take the larger white rings and place them along the border of the cupcake.

What We're Obsessed With This Week

Our first obsession this week is the must see newly rebooted Amazing Spider-Man movie.   The film stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as his true love interest from the comic series, Gwen Stacy.  Andrew and Emma have an undeniable onscreen chemistry which enhances the pleasurable viewing dynamic of Peter and Gwen's flourishing relationship.  The movie is very eventful and the story is a truly heartfelt tale, worthy of the comic it has been adapted from.  Each of the actors in the film excel in their role.  Rhys Ifans' Lizard looks fantastic onscreen, and the 3D makes you feel as if you are web slinging throughout New York City with Spider-Man himself.  We cannot stress enough that this is a film you must see in the theater in order to really appreciate all of the effects.  In fact, we suggest you see it multiple times!

Our second obsession this week is this Harry Potter cake we spotted on When Geeks Wed.  The cake includes Hedwig, Harry's snowy owl mail carrier and close friend throughout the series, Harry's unmistakable thick framed round glasses, books, Harry's wand, Polyjuice Potion and a note.  What's even more exciting is that everything is entirely edible.  The cake was created by Rosebud Cakes in Beverly Hills.

Our next obsession was announced this past week at HeroesCon.  Bill Willingham has announced that the first annual Fabletown and Beyond convention will be held next year on March 22-24th, 2013 in Rochester, MN.  Mike Carey (The Unwritten), Matt Sturgess (House of Mystery), and Mike Oeming (Powers), have all already been confirmed as some of the guests attending Willingham's convention.  The convention will center not only around Fables, which is coming upon its 10th anniversary, but all "mythic fiction."  Mark Buckingham has also been announced as the convention's guest of honor.

Our fourth obsession this week is with a delicious recipe we found for chocolate peanut butter popsicles. As the temps continue to rise, these are the perfect treats to cool down with. The recipe comes courtesy of Eating Made Easy's Amelia Winslow, and it features one of our favorite things...Peanut Butter & Co.'s Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter. The popsicles are deliciously smooth and creamy, and perfect for summer! You can find Amelia's recipe here.

Our last obsession this week is with this adorkable Joss Whedon action figure. The action figure will be one of four collectibles packaged with special edition DVDs of Morgan Spurlock's documentary "Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope". The other three figures available are Spurlock, Stan Lee, and Harry Knowles. The special edition DVD will be available exclusively at Toys 'R' Us stores beginning July 10.

The Spice Girls Reunite to Announce New Musical

Girl power!

This week the Spice Girls were pictured together for the first time since the end of their reunion tour in 2008. Victoria "Posh" Beckham, Emma "Baby" Bunton, Melanie "Scary" Brown, Geri "Ginger" Halliwell, and Melanie "Sporty" Chisholm reunited in London on Tuesday to announce that an exciting new musical featuring their biggest hits will debut at the Piccadilly Theatre this December. The sight of the ladies reunion may look familiar to you if you're a Spice Girls fan. It took place at the St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel, where they filmed the video for their hit song "Wannabe" in 1996.

Bunton told press, "For us, having our songs in a musical is just a dream come true." Beckham added, "I'm really, really excited!"

The musical, titled Viva Forever!, follows the story of a singer who experiences overnight success and is forced to deal with some of the pitfalls that come with fame and fortune, including the impact her sudden celebrity has on her family and friends. Viva Forever! comes from writer & comedienne Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) and Judy Craymer (producer of the hit musical Mamma Mia).

Tickets are on sale now. You can purchase them on the show's official website here.

Tune In Alert: TLC's Craft Wars Premieres Tonight!

Get your glitter, glue sticks, and sewing kit ready because TLC's newest competition series, Craft Wars, premieres tonight!

Craft Wars is being billed as the ultimate crafting competition. Each week, three new contestants will face off in a bid to win $10,000. The competition features two different challenges. The first is titled the Pop Craft challenge. During this challenge the contestants are tasked to recreate a popular craft in one hour, using only supplies available to them in the "Michaels Craft Closet".

And can we take a moment to talk about that craft closet?

Look at that thing! Many of my friends dream of one day having a closet like Carrie Bradshaw's in Sex and The City, but I don't. I dream of having my own "Michaels Craft Closet".

Back to the competition. At the end of the hour, the contestants present their finished crafts to a panel of judges (Erica Domesk, author of P.S. - I made this...; Stephen Brown, owner of Glitterville Studios; and Jo Pearson, Michaels creative expert). The judges evaluate the crafts and then eliminate the contestant they determine is the weakest crafter. Then, the two remaining contestants go on to the Master Craft challenge. During this final challenge, the contestants are given a greater period of time to create a more elaborate craft. The winner of this final challenge wins the $10,000 prize.

In tonight's premiere, the contestants are first challenged to make a fashionable duffle bag out of classic sports equipment. After the elimination, the two remaining contestants are tasked with impressing the judges by creating a playhouse using only school supplies.

Sounds like a great show, right? Well, it gets even better (at least for us Donna Martin fans). Yes, Craft Wars is hosted by Beverly Hills 90210 alum Tori Spelling. Spelling herself is an avid crafter and is often seen on her reality TV series, Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, doing DIY projects.

As a second-generation DIY-er (thanks Mom!), I am so excited to see what this series has to offer. And I hope to learn a few new tips and tricks while watching.

Craft Wars premieres tonight at 10/9c on TLC.

The Walking Dead Fondant Cake

Being the huge Walking Dead fans that we are, we simply could not resist this creative cake inspired by scenes from The Walking Dead television show. Mélanie Bergeron decided to challenge herself and bake a cake for a her boyfriend's birthday that was entire edible.  She created this Walking Dead cake using only cake, sugar paste, fondant and food coloring.  The cake depicts Lori, Rick and Daryl standing on top of their car, Glen holding a bloody machete which he used to cut the zombie in front of him in half, the little girl zombie that we all remember from the very first episode of season 1, Carl standing atop the pickup truck and several other mutilated zombies.  You can view more close-up picture of Melanie's cake and fondant figures below and on her Facebook page.  And don't forget that AMC's Walking Dead preview weekend for Season 3 is scheduled for July 7-8!  We can't wait to see more stills of Michionne and the Governor.

What We're Obsessed With This Week

Our first obsession this week are these doughnut pancakes with doughnut glaze syrup via Cooking Classy.  The description says that they taste like cake doughnuts and pancakes in one. The recipe and instructions are available on Cooking Classy's blog and both the pancakes and the syrup seem very simple to prepare.  We also love how they're topped off with rainbow sprinkles.  Anyone who knows us knows that rainbow sprinkles are one of our food weaknesses.

Our second obsession is this video of the Harry Potter theme song being played on wine glasses.  It is amazing how accurately the theme music was replicated using only glasses of water to create the tune.  Speaking of Harry Potter, Pottermore announced this morning that they will be announcing the first annual Pottermore House Cup on July 5th.

Our next obsession is with this awesome Thor Hammer Cuff Bracelet. The lightweight bracelet features a double-headed Mjölnir that encircles your wrist. It also features a little bit of bling. Each hammer is accented with 48 small rhinestones. You can purchase yours today for $36.99, exclusively at ThinkGeek.

Our last obsession this week is with the SDCC exclusive Walking Dead Michonne action figure. McFarlane Toys created the limited edition "Bloody Michonne", which will be available for $25 at the Skybound booth at Comic-Con in July. The 6-inch-tall Michonne figure features the bloody poncho she wore when she first encountered Rick and the other survivors in the comic book series. The figure also includes Michonne's famous katana sword, her pliers, hammer, and power drill. Can't get to SDCC this year, but want your own Bloody Michonne? Well, then watch Skybound.com for details on how you can get the exclusive figure after SDCC ends.

Etsy Shop of The Day: Designed4Divas

Recently I did a post about the Marvel Limited Edition Reeboks that will be hitting stores soon. While I'm excited that the line will feature women's sneakers, sometimes a girl just wants a pair of nerdy high heels. That's how I found Designed4Divas. Veronica Birch is the brilliant creator behind the amazing comic book high heels found in her Etsy shop. All of her heels are hand created and therefore one of a kind. Veronica even offers customization, so if there's a specific character you want featured on your Avengers heels she can make it happen.

And you're in luck, because Veronica is running a special 25% off sale that ends tomorrow. So, get over to her shop today and pick your favorite pair(s). Happy shopping!
